What to know about hardwood flooring and floating installation

There's a good reason why hardwood flooring is often the #1 choice of homeowners. Wood floors make a stunning design statement, adding warmth and charm to any space.

They're also relatively cost-effective because they last for decades; that eliminates costly repairs and replacements.

You’ve probably heard a lot about the floating floor–but is it possible with hardwood?

Yes, if it’s engineered hardwood flooring

Be aware that there are two kinds of hardwood: solid and engineered. Solid is permanently installed via the traditional tongue and groove/nail down. Engineered has several installation possibilities, including floating floor, nail, and glue-down.

With a floating floor, the engineered hardwood floors click together to mat. Then they hover over the subfloor without nails or glue.

Why can’t solid hardwood be installed to float?

Solid hardwood expands or contracts to adjust to the weather. That creates cupping, crowning, warping, and gapping.

The installer, therefore, creates very tight seams. That tightness helps control some of the movement.

When affixed to the subfloor, there is no movement. However, floating floors aren't bound to the subfloor, so even the slightest movement can throw it off balance.

What’s the advantage of a floating floor?

It's fast and uncomplicated, automatically making installing your engineered wood flooring in Nutley, NJ, less expensive.

Also, since no nails or glue are involved, the pieces are easy to pick up and move.

What’s the difference between a solid and engineered wood floor?

Solid is one slab throughout. Engineered is composed of several layers underneath, all positioned in a crosswise position.

On the surface, both look similar. Engineered, however, is constructed to be more stable and better able to handle water.
